Scamming gang active on the pretext of talking to the bank for KYC update

Kathmandu. It has been found that the scam gang is active on the pretext of speaking to the bank for KYC update.

The police have arrested four members of the gang on the charge of being involved in this fraud. Financial institutions, digital wallets such as e-sewa or telecom services need to update their personal details from time to time for verifying the customer’s identity and security.

The arrestees have been identified as Abhay Tiwari, 22, of Deutal Rural Municipality-4, Jaya Kumar Kewat, 22, of Ramgram Municipality-16, Bidhya Sagar Kewat, 22, of Ramgram Municipality-17 and Kuber Thapa, 27, of Birgunj Metropolitan City-3, Parsa.

A police team deputed from the Cyber Bureau arrested them from Chitwan in coordination with the District Police Office, Chitwan. According to the CIB, the arrested people have been involved in fraud by targeting the incumbent and retired employees by asking them to ‘screen share’ through phone and WhatsApp, obtaining OTP code and transferring the amount in the account to another account.

Spokesperson of the Cyber Bureau and Superintendent of Police Dilip Kumar Giri said that the arrested people had been making phone calls and WhatsApp calls especially targeting the incumbent and retired employees pretending to be talking from the bank.

Police said that they have been remanded in custody for five days from the Kathmandu District Court under the Electronic Transaction Act, 2063 BS.

Police have urged the people not to provide OTP, password, PIN and other sensitive details to anyone by calling over phone or online in the name of banks and financial institutions.
