Kathmandu. More than 300,000 security personnel have been mobilized for the upcoming elections to the House of Representatives scheduled for March 4.
The government has mobilized 3,41,111 security personnel, including temporary police, in a bid to conduct the polls in a free, free, fair and fear-free environment.
A total of 79,727 personnel have been deployed from the Nepal Army, 34,576 from the Armed Police Force, 75,797 from the Nepal Police, 1,921 from the National Investigation Agency and 149,090 from the Election Police (Permanent). Election Commissioner Sagun Shumsher Rana, who is also the coordinator of the Election Security and Risk Management Committee, said that there was no reason to cast any doubt on the situation of peace and security across the country. Stating that the CIAA has been taking information from the chiefs of the security bodies from time to time about the security situation across the country, he said that no security threat has been reported.
He, however, clarified that the EC had decided to mobilize the army a little earlier than in the past to create an environment conducive for the election and to make everyone feel safe. He clarified that the modality of mobilization has been prepared in such a way that the army can be in the first circle if necessary for peace and security, as the political parties have suggested that the security in the third circle was not effective despite the deployment of the army in the previous elections.
“The Election Commission will conduct the election. The election army is to be deployed in coordination with the government and the commission. We have been in discussion and coordination with the chiefs of all the security bodies from the very beginning. They said that no such problem was found in the meeting of the Election Security Committee. Some have said that they will boycott the election, but that does not have any effect. But the weather can be a hindrance. The army has been deployed in the elections in the past as well. But it was only a little late.
This is not an ordinary election and we have recommended the deployment of the army to bring the citizens involved in the election. We have recommended that the morale of other security agencies deployed in this election should also be boosted. The Nepal Army has also transported the ballot papers. We have also mobilized the army for the transportation of ballot papers in the mountainous districts. The army has also been mobilized to facilitate the detection of explosives during the elections. ’
The first meeting of the Election Security Committee had decided to recommend the government for the use of Nepal Army in the elections. The House of Representatives election is taking place on March 7.
