Kathmandu. Kathmandu has become the fifth most polluted city in the world on Friday. Kathmandu has the most polluted air quality among the top 100 cities in the world, according to IQ Air, an international air pollution measurement organization based in Switzerland.

The air quality index (AQI) reached 158 points on Friday. This is a very unhealthy level in terms of public health. Hanoi (Vietnam) (164), Lahore (Pakistan) (162), Kolkata (India) and Delhi (160) are the most polluted cities in the world.

The AQI between 201 and 300 has been given purple while dividing the score from 0 to 500 in terms of the impact of air pollution on public health. It is recommended not to do any physical activity in the open at this level, which is very unhealthy for human health.

In such a situation, it is considered beneficial to stay indoors. A level above violet i.e. an AQI above 300 is given a maroon color, which is considered a hazardous level for public health.

Emission from diesel-powered vehicles, smoke from forest fires, brick factories, emissions from burning of agricultural residues and emissions from burning of garbage are considered to be the major causes of air pollution.

The number of people suffering from respiratory cancer, lung cancer, heart disease, hypertension and stroke has increased in recent years due to air pollution, which affects most of the organs of the body.
