Kathmandu. The British College (TBC) based in Thapathali has made its official views public on the misinformation, rumours and agitation incidents that have been disseminated through social media and various media in recent period. The college has claimed that some people have intensified the incident with the intention of damaging the reputation of the institution and gaining financial benefits.

The British College, established in 2011, is an institution providing higher education in Nepal in partnership with British universities. According to the college, it is a college accredited by the British Accreditation Council and follows the prevailing regulations of the Government of Nepal and currently has around 1,500 students studying in Nepal.

According to the college, the latest dispute is related to the foundation program under Hospitality Management and academic collaboration with Dubai-based Woolwich Institute. According to the college, the foundation program of hospitality management has been approved by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology and the official documents related to it are available.

According to the college, students can complete the Pearson H&D diploma in Dubai and then go to other countries for final year top-up studies.

The Woolwich Institute is an independent institution licensed by the Government of Dubai and regulated by the KHDA. More than three dozen Nepali students are currently studying in Dubai.

The college claims that the movement started with limited curiosity but was later intensified by some people for financial gain. According to the statement, a former student and his colleagues, who faced the possibility of disciplinary action in Dubai, had encouraged other students to leave their studies and return to Nepal. The college has also claimed that it has planned to extort a large amount of money from the college through WhatsApp messages.

After returning to Nepal, 9 students staged a demonstration on the college premises, blocked classrooms, misbehaved with the staff and broadcast it live through social media, according to the college.

More than 40 unrelated people associated with various political student unions entered the campus and created a riot and the situation was brought under control after police intervention. A former student of the college administration has been arrested on the charge of financial pressure under the National Penal Code, 2074.

However, the college has spoken to parents and students to resolve the issue and has proposed options for full refund of fees, transfer to other programs or institutions, and continuity of studies.

According to the college, 7 out of 9 people who returned from Dubai accepted the solution and 2 returned to Dubai. Meanwhile, acknowledging that some programmes have been affected due to the temporary suspension of the No Objection Letter (NOC) for Dubai study visas, the college said it has provided the affected students with alternative routes and support.

“The British College is committed to its core objective of providing quality British education in Nepal, reiterating its policy of academic excellence, transparency, regulatory compliance and zero tolerance to financial pressures,” the statement read.

As per the agreement, the students were provided with accommodation and internship opportunities.

More than three dozen Nepali students are currently successfully studying in Dubai, progressing academically and getting industry internships.

The British College’s response to the controversy: the reality behind the movement

According to a detailed internal review, although initially a small number of students showed some curiosity, they did not intend to launch a large-scale agitation. These limited issues have been misused by other individuals and external parties to damage the reputation of the company, which has been turned into an economic pressure tactic with the involvement of a small group and some competing elements.

Key Facts Justifying the Purpose of Financial Pressure

Initial events in Dubai

A former TWI Dubai student was given a formal verbal warning due to his repeated misbehavior towards teachers and staff and the possibility of disciplinary action.

After this warning, the man and his two close associates Priyanka Nepal and Sajina Khadka (first-year hospitality management students of Nepal) started encouraging other Nepali students to leave their studies and return to Nepal.

Proof of economic pressure

WhatsApp messages show a clear plan to extort a large amount of money from the college by making a public uproar.

The hospitality students who returned from Dubai received Rs. 1000 per person from the college. He had promised to claim Rs 2 crore. It was also claimed that the movement and political reach would be used to recover the money.

From this point on, the issue of personal discipline morphed into an organized economic pressure strategy.

False and misleading claims: Explanation with facts

The claim that the foundation program is invalid or not approved by the ministry is completely false. Official acceptance letters confirm that the program is fully approved.

The claims that students in Dubai were forced to sleep on the streets, were not given accommodation, that the institution is fake are completely false and misleading. TWI Dubai

Dubai Knowledge Park is a fully licensed institution regulated by the KHDA. The accommodation was arranged as per the agreement. The subsequent housing problems were caused by the negligence of individual students, not institutional failures. No additional assistance was requested in Dubai on this matter.

The claimant himself admitted on social media that he was expected to study at Pearson HND Dubai, which confirms that he was fully aware of the program’s structure.

Agitation and police intervention

Disruption to the College

After returning to Nepal, 9 students from Dubai, with the help of the students of Hospitality Management, disrupted the meeting called by the college authorities and protested aggressively inside the TBC campus. An atmosphere of fear and unrest was created among those who were in the dialogue. Some of the archived events include:

Locking teachers in the classroom

Misbehaving with academic and administrative staff

Abusive and threatening

Continuous unauthorized live streaming via TikTok / Instagram

Involvement of external groups and police action

As the agitation escalated, more than 40 unrelated people associated with student organizations of various political parties were forced into the campus. These individuals had no educational or institutional connection with TBC.

They caused college mob riots, intimidation and property damage, leading to police intervention and several arrests.

Due to the timely intervention of the Nepal Police, further violence and serious damage were prevented and peace and security were restored to the campus.

In this context, the police arrested Bibek Dhakal, a former student of MSc subject who is yet to pay fees to the college, on the basis of evidence related to financial pressure under Section 253 of the National Penal Code, 2074.

This incident clearly shows that the so-called movement has gone far beyond any legitimate student concern and has turned into an organized illegal attempt to create fear, chaos and reputational damage for financial gain.

The 2 students admitted that they were influenced and returned to Dubai to continue their studies.

Government of Nepal Regarding NOC

The decision of the Government of Nepal to temporarily suspend the NOC for UAE study visas had affected some colleges and universities in the UAE that do not fall under the CAA framework. This step has been taken mainly due to unregulated entities based out of Dubai. Woolwich Institute

Dubai is regulated by the KHDA but does not fall under the CAA framework.

Although this matter is beyond our agreement, The British College is actively working to:

All the affected hospitality foundations contacted the students and parents.

Alternative routes and assistance were proposed.

The foundation provided the option of completing the course, refund or transfer.

In this way, TDR has shown that it has always been committed to exceeding expectations for students. The college has reached a cordial and satisfactory agreement with all the Hospitality Foundation students. However, only two of them decided not to accept the consensus effort.
