Kathmandu. Nepali Congress (NC) President Gagan Kumar Thapa has expressed his disagreement over the proposal of the three major political parties to form a provincial government.

Stating that forming a government with the merger of three parties would render the State Assembly without opposition and it would be against the people’s mandate, he made it clear that the NC would reject such a proposal outright.

Speaking at the unveiling of the statue of Santa Gurung leader Krishna Prasad Bhattarai and inaugurating the 44th BP Memorial Week in Lalitpur on Sunday, President Thapa announced that he would not compromise on principle for power.

}’We don’t repeat past mistakes for power’

Admitting that the Nepali Congress had committed some mistakes in the past for the sake of power, Thapa expressed commitment that it would not follow such path henceforth. According to him, the politics of 2072 BS has become unstable and directionless due to the thinking of considering power as everything.

He said that the credibility of politics has fallen due to the tendency of the party which was in power till the morning and the party in the opposition suddenly becoming the ruling party.

“The old parties, including the Nepali Congress, are now paying a heavy price for their belief that power is everything,” Thapa said.

‘Respect the mandate and move forward’

President Thapa pointed out that the identity of the political parties is in crisis due to the instability seen in the electoral alliance and the power equation. He stressed that the NC should be honest to its basic principles and people’s mandate instead of just joining the government or retaining power.

“A lot of people ask us what our role is in the context of the state government. Whatever the result, the Nepali Congress will not compromise on its principles,” he said. We have rejected the proposal to form a provincial government with the three parties as it is against the people’s mandate. ’

Stating that forming a government with the merger of three parties means making the Provincial Assembly without opposition, he clarified that participation in the government was not the only objective of the NC.

“The tendency of forming an alliance with one party before the election and forming a government with another after the election has made the role of the government and the opposition in confusion. Now, politics should move ahead on the basis of principles and democratic values respecting the people’s mandate,” he said.
