Kathmandu. Chief of CPN-UML’s Publicity and Publication Department, Niraj Acharya, has said that people’s mandate should not be taken as arbitrariness in a democracy.

Referring to the activities of the incumbent government, Acharya said that the people’s mandate given by the people was for the welfare of the people but misusing it arbitrarily was serious.

Writing on social media today, Acharya said that it was inhumane to displace the landless, squatters and impoverished people who were taking shelter in holding centers after floods and inundation without alternative arrangements.

Acharya said that the landless, squatters and indigent people living in holding centers due to inundation are now in greater danger of deprivation, mental stress and displacement. “Issuing ultimatums, intimidation and putting people in shelters at risk of starvation is condemnable and inhuman,” he said. He also questioned the role of the government, saying that the mandate of the people in a democracy does not mean arbitrariness.

Acharya urged the government to respect the right to life guaranteed by the constitution and safe housing. Stating that a policy of management and displacement should be adopted first, he said that the affected people should be relocated only after ensuring alternative settlement, rehabilitation and livelihood.

He urged the government to immediately stop all activities against human rights and use force against citizens. Drawing the attention of the government, Acharya warned that serious social dissatisfaction could arise if the citizens ignored the basic needs of the citizens and human sensitivity. He said the government should be responsible as per the constitution and democratic norms and values.
