Kathmandu. Venezuela has declared a state of emergency after two powerful earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 on the Richter scale. At least 32 people have been killed in the quake, with buildings collapsing in various areas, including the capital Caracas, Al Jazeera reported.
Acting President Delcy Rodriguez has declared a state of emergency in an address to the nation. Stating that 20 aftershocks have been recorded after the earthquake, he urged the citizens to adopt high alertness.
Other people trapped under the rubble are being rescued. In the Chacao region alone, more than four buildings collapsed and at least 18 people were rescued alive. Hundreds of security personnel have been mobilized for rescue and relief operations.
The quake caused widespread damage in the states of Caracas, Miranda, La Guaira, Aragua and Carabobo. Schools, trains and metro services have also been closed. The U.S. Geological Survey has warned that the quake could cause significant damage.
However, the official details have not been made public yet. Meanwhile, several countries have pledged to provide rescue and humanitarian assistance to Venezuela.
