Kathmandu. KATHMANDU: Nepal Police Club has won the Kathmandu Mayor Cup Swimming Championship. Acting Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City Sunita Dangol handed over Rs 50,000 along with trophies, medals and certificates to the winners.
The club finished first with 1,036 points in the championship held at Satdobato-based swimming pool in Lalitpur on Saturday and Sunday. Similarly, Nisarg Batika School secured the first runner-up position with 778 points while Nepal APF Club secured the second runner-up position with 576 points.
The first runner-up received a cash prize of Rs. 25,000 while the second runner-up received Rs. 15,000 along with trophies, medals and certificates. Gems School finished fourth with 489 points while Tribhuvan Army Club finished fifth with 281 points.
APF’s Jaden Shrestha and Police’s Irvin Shrestha were named the best male player of the tournament with 3,000 points each. Devansi Joshi, who competed for Nepal Police Club, was named the best female player of the tournament with 9,002 points. They were awarded with a cash prize of Rs 15,000, trophies, medals and certificates.
Players from various schools including Nepal Police, Armed Police Force, Nepal Army, James, Little Angel, Sagarmatha Club and other clubs competed in the competition. The participants ranged in age from 6 to 25 years in age.
Responding briefly after felicitating the players, acting mayor Dangol said the metropolis has increased its investment in sports infrastructures and competitive sports projects with the objective of producing national athletes from the local level and encouraging them to compete in international games.
The metropolis has kept a team of health workers along with medicines for emergency treatment and ambulance service at the venue. The competition was held in 37 different disciplines including freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke and waterfly in 50m, 100m, 200m and 400m distances. The competitions were held in the morning and evening.
On the occasion, Nepal Swimming Association President Jagat Man Shrestha and General Secretary Ishwor Kumar Karki said that the investment made by the Kathmandu Metropolitan City in the sports sector would produce human resources that can make the country proud.
