Kathmandu. Chairman of the Ujyalo Nepal Party, Kulman Ghising, has expressed his ire at the government for removing the settlements of landless squatters.
Addressing a programme organized by the Youth and Students Department close to the party, he said he had provided electricity to the landless squatters at a time when the incumbent government was displacing the landless squatters.
“We protest that the way they are trying to address the problems of landless squatters is not right from the humanitarian and legal point of view,” he said.
Stating that there are 10-12 lakh landless squatters in the country, he said that he provided free meters to the landless squatters when they were told that electricity should not be provided to them at that time.
“After I came to the Nepal Electricity Authority, we provided electricity by providing meters free of cost to every Nepali so that every Nepali would be able to burn electricity if one is a citizen,” he said. Now, the government informed the house overnight and demolished it the next day. This is not right in any way. ’
He said that the problem of landless squatters should be managed humanely and legally. According to him, there is not only the problem of landless squatters but also the problem of unregistered land in the country.
“It is not the government’s job to demolish and destroy houses haphazardly. It has to be built. There has always been destruction in this country,” he added.
“There was a lot of destruction during the 10-year conflict in the past and the recent Genji movement,” he said.
