Stolen diamonds and pearls worth over Rs 2 crore seized from India

Kathmandu. The Nepal Police Sudurpaschim Province Office has confiscated property worth Rs 20 million in diamonds and pearls smuggled into Nepal from New Delhi, India.

A team including Upendra Rawat of Budhiganga Municipality-10 in Bajura had stolen property worth millions of rupees from the house of Sanjay Kumar Makhija of Rajendranagar, India, three months ago.

According to Mahesh Shahi, Police Inspector at the Provincial Police Office, Dhangadhi, the investigation into the incident was initiated after Sanjay Kumar Makhji lodged a complaint with the Nepal Police.

Police arrested Lokesh Dhami of Khaptad Chhanna Rural Municipality-3 in Bajura and Arjun Sunar of Sanphebagar Municipality-4 in Achham along with Upendra Rawat.

“After a long investigation, we arrested them from different places,” Shahi said, adding, “They had kept jewelry and cash at their relatives’ houses.” We have now recovered it and handed it over to the complainant,” Shahi said. Police confiscated Rs 20.7 million along with jewelry from the three arrested persons, Shahi said.

The investigation was carried out by the State Police Office in collaboration with various district police offices. According to Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Om Bahadur Rana, chief of the State Police Office, Dhangadhi, police have confiscated gold and silver jewelry, watches of various companies and currencies worth more than Rs 21 million so far.

Police confiscated 12 gold watches with Rs 13.44 million, gold ornaments worth Rs 4.33 lakh, diamonds and gold rings worth Rs 1.55 lakh, silver jewelry worth Rs 215,530 and gold worth Rs 300,000 from three persons. Police also confiscated Rs 12.90 lakh from them, said Rana. The seized cash and currency of different countries have been handed over to the concerned persons.

The main accused is still absconding

According to the State Police Office, Dhangadhi, the main accused involved in the theft is still absconding. The police suspect that the man has more stolen property than what has been recovered at present.

“We are searching for the main accused,” said Mahesh Shahi, police inspector at the Provincial Police Office, Dhangadhi. The identity of the main accused has been kept secret by the police.
