Kathmandu. US President Donald Trump left for a three-day high-level visit to China on Thursday. Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping are expected to discuss a wide range of trade, technology and bilateral relations during their highly-anticipated summit. Trump has indicated that trade will be the main agenda of the talks.
This will be the ninth face-to-face meeting between Trump and Xi Jinping. It is also the first visit by a US president to China since 2017.
According to the White House, US First Lady Melania Trump will not participate in this trip. Speaking to reporters before his departure to China, Trump said he was optimistic about the visit. He expressed confidence that strong relations with China would continue for many decades to come.
“I have a very good relationship with President Xi. We’ve always worked well and our cooperation with China has been positive,” Trump said. Responding to a question on Xi Jinping’s role in a possible deal with Iran, Trump said Iran has been weakened militarily and the US is capable of achieving its goals.
Trump also said that trade will be the most important topic in the talks with China. Trump is accompanied by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. The U.S. delegation also includes representatives from major U.S. companies in the technology, finance, defense and consumer sectors.
