Kathmandu. KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court (SC) has sought a written response from the government on the issue of removing forced squatters and unsystematic settlements in the Kathmandu Valley.
A single bench of Justice Sunil Kumar Pokharel issued the order to the Office of the Attorney General to submit a written response in the name of the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers within 15 days.
KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court (SC) has sought a written response from the government on whether the document of governance reforms and clause 5 of the Act Related to Housing have been completed. The apex court has questioned on what legal basis the act of vacating the settlements of landless squatters and unsystematic settlers and demolishing houses and huts was carried out.
Likewise, the apex court has sought a written response as to what arrangements have been made for the rehabilitation of the evicted families, food and drink, medical treatment of senior citizens, sick and disabled people and alternative arrangements for education of children. It has also sought a written response from the government on the latest status of data collection and verification of the people evicted from the settlement and the details of the demolished schools, temples, monasteries and mosques and the works being carried out for their management.
The government had issued a notice on April 30 to relocate the goods within April 1 and vacate the settlement from April 1. The court has summoned the court for discussion on May 7 regarding the interim order demanded to stop the eviction of the settlements.
