Kathmandu. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has broken the stronghold of the opposition with a historic victory in the counting of votes in the West Bengal Assembly.
The latest election results will change the power equation in Bengal. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ruling party has created an opportunity to form the government for the first time. The BJP won 206 seats in the 294-member West Bengal Assembly. That’s more than two-thirds.
The Trinamool Congress has been reduced to 80 seats, while the Communist Party has won only two seats. Out of 294 seats, 148 seats are needed for a majority. The BJP, which has not been able to govern West Bengal so far, has decided to displace the All India Trinamool Congress government led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
Chief Minister Banerjee lost her Bhawanipur seat to BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari by over 15,000 votes. Banerjee, who has been in power since 2011, has been a vocal critic of Modi and is considered to be a strong political influence in the state. Opposition parties have also questioned the fairness of the election. Modi described the West Bengal results as a historic achievement.
There is also a political change in South India. Joseph Vijay, a popular actor in the film industry, has emerged in Tamil Nadu. The Tamilga Vettri Kazhagam party, founded by him, has overtaken the ruling DMK. Similarly, in Kerala, the opposition coalition led by the Indian National Congress defeated the ruling Communist government and ended the Left rule.
After 50 years, there will be no Left government in any state of India. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has retained power in the northeastern state of Assam for a third consecutive term.
