Kathmandu. KATHMANDU — The Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers has started the process of taking back vehicles from employees and officials who have been availing the facilities of government vehicles on the basis of access.

So far, 622 government vehicles have been taken back from various ministries, bodies and constitutional commissions, according to the PM’s Secretariat.

The preliminary investigation found that even the lower level employees and officials of the lower level were using government vehicles even though there is a legal provision that only the officials of the first class or above gazetted are entitled to the facility of government vehicles.

Details of the vehicles being used by the employees and officials of all the government bodies have been demanded. A circular was issued on May 10 directing the government to immediately return all the vehicles being used by the employees and officials of the level that are not required to provide vehicles as per the prevailing law.

No employee or official shall be allowed to use a government vehicle alone except as prescribed by law. However, employees and officials of all levels will be allowed to use government vehicles en masse in special work or uncomfortable situations.

The Secretariat has said that it is studying the financial burden of using government vehicles against the law.
