Kathmandu. Israel and Lebanon have signed a 10-day ceasefire after nearly a month-long war. With this, the citizens have felt a sense of peace.

Thousands of long-displaced people have begun to return to their homes, and there was excitement on the streets, the BBC reported. Civilians displaced by more than a month-long Israeli offensive in southern Lebanon are returning en masse.

Some people have welcomed the ceasefire by dancing in the streets. The US-initiated agreement was initially valid for 10 days, which could be extended if needed.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the ceasefire an opportunity for “historic peace”. Lebanon’s President Joseph Khalil Aoun also said it was positive. Hezbollah has indicated that it will accept a ceasefire, but has put a condition that all attacks in Lebanon must be stopped completely.

It also demanded a complete withdrawal of Israeli troops from southern Lebanon. Israel has said it will maintain a 10-kilometre zone in southern Lebanon as a “security zone”, raising signs that tensions could escalate in the future.

According to analysts, the ceasefire is expected to be weak and temporary. Analysts say the long-term peace in the Middle East requires resolving the problems between Iran, the United States and other regional powers.
