Kathmandu. The government has decided to increase the fare of public transport and transportation vehicles. The Department of Transport Management (DoTM) is preparing to fix the new fare after the ministry agreed in principle.

Senior Vice-President of Federation of Nepalese National Transport Entrepreneurs, Saroj Sitaula, said that the public transport fare has been increased by 16.71 percent in the last fiscal year. Similarly, the fare of cargo vehicles has also increased significantly. The fare has been increased by 21.68 percent for the goods carriers plying in the hilly region and 15.75 percent for the Terai region.

According to the Department of Transport Management, the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport has given in-principle approval for the fare hike. The department is preparing to publish the details of the new fare through its official website shortly.

Transport entrepreneurs have long demanded the fare adjustment citing the rise in the price of petroleum products in the international market and other technical reasons. With the implementation of the new fare, the daily commute of the general public and the price of consumables may also be affected.
