Kathmandu. The conflict between Iran and Israel has escalated amid escalating tensions in the Middle East. Iran fired missiles at Qatar’s Ras Lafan industrial area in retaliation for the attack by Israel and the United States on Iran’s South Perce gas field.
Qatar’s state-owned oil company said the attack caused a fire at a major gas refinery. The fire was brought under control by emergency crews, but the infrastructure was badly damaged. Qatar has expelled two Iranian diplomats over the incident.
Qatar’s interior ministry said the fire was completely contained within hours and there were no casualties. The government has reacted strongly to the attack, calling it a serious threat to national security.
The Ras Lafan Industrial Area is a major gas refinery located about 80 kilometers north of Qatar’s capital Doha. It is home to the world’s largest liquefied natural gas (LNG) export facility and accounts for about 20% of the world’s gas supply.
The region operates from a huge gas reserve called the North Field, which is connected to Iran’s South Perce region. Therefore, any disruption in the region could affect global energy supplies.
The conflict has disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, pushing up international crude prices. The international community has been urging the government not to attack energy infrastructure.
Meanwhile, the three-week conflict between Iran and Israel is likely to escalate, raising concerns that it could have a regional but also global impact.
