KATHMANDU: The government has decided to grant work permit to Nepali workers working in the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Oman, Yemen, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Turkey. This decision has paved the way for Nepalis who had already come on leave to go to their employer countries.
KATHMANDU: The government’s decision to give re-work permit to Nepali workers has brought some relief. Earlier, due to the developed war in the Middle East, the renewal of labor of those countries was halted from March 17. According to the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Security, the decision has been taken due to the volatile situation, security risks and uncertainties seen in these countries in recent times.
However, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has decided not to renew the work for Nepalis working in Iran, Israel, Bahrain, Kuwait, Iraq and Lebanon. According to the Department of Foreign Employment, 70,503 people, including old and new ones, were given work permit for employment till mid-January.
Of them, 48,226 had taken work permit to go to 12 countries in the Middle East. Out of the top 5 destinations for Nepali workers, 4 are Kuwait, UAE, Saudi Arabia and Qatar.
In February, the department issued work permit to 52,000 people, both new and old. The government has also urged people not to travel non-essential to Middle East countries and to suspend non-essential travel.
