Kathmandu. India defeated New Zealand in the final of the ICC T20 World Cup 2019 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. With this, India became the first country to win the T20 World Cup three times. India won the T20 World Cup in 2007, 2024 and now in 2026.
India had set a target of 256 runs for New Zealand to win. New Zealand were bowled out for 159 runs in 19 overs. India defeated New Zealand by 96 runs to win the T20 World Cup for the second time in a row.
Both Indian batsmen and bowlers performed well in the final. Jasprit Bumrah took four wickets for 15 runs in four overs.
Axar Patel took three wickets for 27 runs in three overs. Earlier, Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan and Abhishek Sharma batted aggressively and India scored 255 runs in 20 overs.
Jasprit Bumrah was adjudged the Player of the Match. Sanju Samson, who scored three consecutive half-centuries, was named the ‘Player of the Tournament’.
Chasing a target of 256 runs, New Zealand openers Tim Seifert and Finn Allen were under pressure from the start. In the first over, New Zealand scored only 4 runs against Arshdeep Singh.
In the second over, Tim Seifert scored 21 runs off the bowling of Hardik Pandya. But in the fourth ball of the third over, Axar Patel gave India the first success by dismissing Finn Allen.
In the first ball of the fourth over, Jasprit Bumrah dismissed Rachin Ravindra. New Zealand scored 52 runs for the loss of 3 wickets.
Tim Seifert scored a half-century off 23 balls but was dismissed by Varun Chakravarthy in the ninth over. At that time, New Zealand had lost 5 wickets for 72 runs.
Later, skipper Mitchell Santner and Daryl Mitchell opened the innings with a partnership. But in the 13th over, Axar Patel broke the partnership by dismissing Daryl Mitchell.
In the 16th over, Jasprit Bumrah dismissed Jimmy Neesham and Matt Henry in two consecutive balls. Then in the 18th over, he bowled Mitchell Santner.
In the last ball of the 19th over, Abhishek Sharma bowled Jacob Duffy to bowl New Zealand for 159 runs. New Zealand’s Finn Allen (99), Rachin Ravindra (91) and Glenn Phillips (95) were dismissed early in the innings.
Despite losing early wickets, opener Tim Seifert played with one end. He scored 52 runs off 26 balls.
Apart from him, captain Mitchell Santner scored 43 runs. But they could not avoid the defeat of the team. In the end, New Zealand were bowled out for 159 runs in 19 overs.
Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma opened the innings for India. India scored 50 runs in four overs without losing any wicket.
Abhishek Sharma scored a half-century off 18 balls. India scored 92 runs in the powerplay, which is the highest powerplay score in the history of the T20 World Cup.
Later, Rachin Ravindra dismissed Abhishek. He scored 52 runs off 21 balls. Ishan Kishan and Sanju Samson then kept the pace of runs.
Sanju completed his half-century off 33 balls and scored his third consecutive fifty. In the 14th over, he hit three consecutive sixes against Rachin Ravindra.
Ishan Kishan completed his half-century in 23 balls. They shared a 100-run partnership for the second wicket in 45 balls. India scored 200 runs in 15 overs.
In the 16th over, Jimmy Neesham took three wickets to bring New Zealand back into the game. He dismissed Sanju Samson 9890, Ishan Kishan 9540 and skipper Suryakumar Yadav. Hardik Pandya also scored 18 runs in 13 balls.
But in the last over, Shivam Dube scored 24 runs against Jimmy Neesham and India’s score was 255 runs. He remained unbeaten on 26 runs in 8 balls.
This is India’s third ICC title in the last 20 months. In June 2024, India became the T20 World Cup champion, won the ICC Champions Trophy in March 2025 and now again in 2026.
