Kathmandu. The appointment of Saeed Mojtaba Khamenei to Iran’s highest religious and political post has sparked celebrations across the country. Mojtaba Khamenei, the second son of late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has been elected as Iran’s new supreme leader, state media reported.
Hundreds of people took to the streets in Tehran and other cities after his name was announced on Monday. They have celebrated by expressing support for the new leadership. The Assembly of Experts appointed Khamenei as the third supreme leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran in accordance with Article 108 of the Constitution.
Iran’s political and security agencies have expressed support for the election of a new supreme leader. Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps, the IRGC, and the General Staff of the Armed Forces have also pledged full support to the leadership of Mojtaba Khamenei.
Meanwhile, Ali Larijani, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, called on the country to unite behind the new leadership. He expressed hope that Iran would move towards development and stability under the leadership of Mojtaba Khamenei. Iran’s parliament speaker also called his election a “peaceful decision for the country”.
Shortly after the new leader was appointed, Iran fired two missiles at Israel, Press TV reported. According to the Jerusalem Post, at least one person was injured when the missiles fell in central Israel.
The developments come amid rising tensions in the Middle East. On February 28, the United States and Israel launched a joint military attack on Iran, killing several senior officials, including then-Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. After this, Iran retaliated by launching drone and missile attacks on various Arab countries.
Nine days after the start of the war, human casualties are also increasing rapidly. According to Al Jazeera, more than 1,300 people have died and nearly 100,000 people have been displaced. Due to the security crisis, many people are fleeing their homes to safer places.
The UN refugee agency has said that the demand for relief and assistance in the affected areas has increased rapidly. There are concerns that the regional security and humanitarian crisis will worsen due to the escalating conflict
