Kathmandu. As the 116th International Women’s Day is being celebrated across the globe with the slogan “Rights, Justice and Opportunity with Action for All Women and Girls”, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has stressed on ensuring that women and girls have access to judicial and legal rights. On this special occasion, NHRC extended best wishes to all the women and girls at home and abroad and drew the attention of the government towards the protection of their human rights.
Stating that the NHRC has been carrying out continuous investigation and monitoring of the incidents of violation of women’s human rights, the NHRC pointed out that still a lot needs to be done regarding the implementation of the laws. The Commission has been carrying out various important works in the field of rights of women and girls.
In particular, the legal status and implementation of single women’s rights are being monitored, from conducting a national inquiry program on the impact of child marriage on the exercise of human rights. The commission has already made public reports after monitoring serious issues like gender test, organizing international gender conferences and on serious issues like forced labor and chhaupadi among others. The NHRC has been consistently suggesting the Government of Nepal to improve the policies and rules that hinder the exercise of women’s rights.
While women’s rights are constitutionally and legally protected, there are still many challenges in practice. The Commission has expressed concern over the increasing incidents of physical and mental violence against adolescent girls and girls due to traditional harmful practices. Domestic violence, human trafficking, digital violence, sexual violence, rape and social discrimination are affecting women’s daily lives. Economic inequality, low participation in politics, impunity and lack of access to justice have prevented women and girls from fully enjoying their rights.
To address these challenges, the NHRC has urged the Government of Nepal to effectively implement the provisions of the Constitution and international law. The NHRC stresses the need to protect women and girls from all forms of violence and exploitation while being sensitive towards equality, empowerment and dignity.
There is a need to take concrete steps to remove the structural barriers to equal justice and to eradicate harmful practices and negative social norms that are entrenched in society. Spokesperson of the Commission, Dr. The statement issued by Tikaram Pokharel has given a message that building a civilized society is not possible until the rights of women are secured.
