Kathmandu. Holi, the festival of colors, is being celebrated in the districts of Tarai-Madhesh today.

Holi was celebrated in the hilly and mountainous districts on Monday. A day later, it is customary to celebrate Holi in the Terai.

The government has declared a public holiday in the districts of the Tarai Madhes today on the occasion of Holi. Monday was a public holiday in the hilly districts.

The name of Holi celebrated varies according to the place. It is called ‘Fagu Purnima’ in the Himalayas and hills and ‘Holi’ in the Tarai-Madhesh. In the Maithili language, Holi is also known as ‘Phagua’ or ‘Holi’.

Although Holi is celebrated on the next day of the full moon day in most parts of the Tarai-Madhes, the Holi festival is celebrated on the next day after the circumambulation of the inner house in Janakpurdham, the capital of ancient Mithila.

The tradition of celebrating Holi has been different here as the pilgrims participating in the fifteen-day Mithila Parikrama circumambulate and reach their respective destinations after circumambulating Janakpurdham. On this occasion, Holi singing competition and Mahamurkh conference are also organized.

The Holi festival, which paints everyone in the same color, has been a source of inspiration for equality and harmony. Giving the message of unity among Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, Christians, Mongols, Kirats, Rais, etc., this festival has spread joy and enthusiasm in the hearts of all.

Holi symbolizes the victory of truth over falsehood, innocence over deceit and religion over unrighteousness.

In Mithilanchal, it is also customary to burn new grains in the fire and eat them as prasad during the Holi festival, which is associated with the Vedic Yajna.
