Kathmandu. The peaceful and mysterious Manichud Lake is hidden in the dense forest of Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park, spread in the northern hilly region of the Kathmandu Valley. Known as the center of religious faith along with the natural beauty, this lake has a completely different atmosphere, a peaceful atmosphere from the noise of the well-known city. It is considered ideal destination for tourists looking to enjoy nature away from the city life. Lately, the number of domestic tourists has also increased here.

The lake is located at an altitude of 2,400 meters above sea level and takes about three hours of trek from Kathmandu’s Jorpati-Sankhu area, Gagalphedi or Sundarijal. Dense forests, cool breezes, and chirping of birds make the trek even more enjoyable. The area is also famous for quiet hiking and bird watching.

According to legend, Manichud, the king of Saket Nagar, was extremely religious and charitable. He is believed to have an innate divine gem on his head. Legend has it that once when this gem was needed to calm a great famine and epidemic, the king sat in this place and cut off his head and donated the gem. The place is called ‘Manichud Dah’ because of the belief that arose from the king’s sacrifices and the influence of Mani. The interesting legend that birds keep clean by picking leaves that have fallen in the lake is still prevalent among the locals.

The lush green forests, the light mist-shrouded water surface and the ambience of spiritual tranquility make the visitors meditative. Especially in the month of Shravan, the movement of devotees increases. Manichud Lake is a unique destination for those seeking a connection with nature and seeking a spiritual experience through a short trekking.
