Kathmandu. Om Birla and Vikram Misri will represent the Indian side at the swearing-in ceremony in Bangladesh tomorrow, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will not attend the event. “Lok Sabha Speaker Birla’s participation reaffirms the deep and longstanding friendship between India and Bangladesh and commitment to shared democratic values,” the ministry said in a statement.

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is going to form the government with a majority. Tarique Rahman is the new Prime Minister of Bangladesh. Chief Advisor to the interim government in Dhaka, Muhammad Yunus, has sent invitations to the heads of governments of Nepal, China, Saudi Arabia, India, Pakistan, Turkey, UAE, Qatar, Malaysia, Brunei, Sri Lanka, Maldives and Bhutan.

According to Bangladeshi media, the swearing-in ceremony will be held at the National Parliament Complex. The swearing-in of the newly-elected parliamentarians will take place at 10 am and the swearing-in of the Council of Ministers at 4 pm.

The BNP’s victory in the 300-member parliament is expected to create a new equation in South Asian politics and India-Bangladesh relations. Prime Minister Narendra Modi telephoned Tariq Rehman to congratulate him on the election results, which is seen as a sign of improvement in relations between the two countries.
