Kathmandu.  North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is preparing to succeed his 13-year-old daughter, Kim Jue, according to the National Intelligence Service.

He is expected to be formally presented to key members at a meeting of the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea at the end of February.

According to NIS, there are signs that Kim is gradually getting his daughter used to political roles. Analysts say the move could be a ploy to continue the Kim family’s hereditary rule.

Kim Jue first appeared in public in November 2022. Since then, she has been seen with her father in military parades, arms test inspections, and inauguration of factories. He also attended a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in September.

Due to the current 18-year-old rule, it may not be immediately possible for him to formally be given a first secretary or a full-fledged position. But analysts say party meetings, speeches, policy documents and government messages are signaling that he is headed for the leadership of the future.

North Korea has been ruled by the Kim dynasty since 1948. Founder Kim Il Sung’s son Kim Jong Il came to power, and in 2011 Kim Jong Un became supreme leader.

State media have referred to Kim Jue as the most beloved child, though he is not officially named, indicating that he is placed in a special place.
