Kathmandu. Preliminary results of Bangladesh’s 13th National Parliamentary election have shown a clear victory for the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). According to Bangladeshi media Dhaka Tribune, the BNP has so far won 151 seats. BNP leader Tarique Rahman is likely to become the next prime minister.

Rahman, 60, is the son of former president Ziar Rahman and former prime minister Khaleda Zia. The Jamaat-e-Islami has 43 seats as the main opposition. The counting of votes is underway across the country. After the July 2024 protests, the general elections and the national referendum in Bangladesh were held in a peaceful and festive atmosphere.

Out of 300 constituencies, voting was held in 299 constituencies, but in Sherpur-3, voting was postponed due to the death of the candidate. The absence of the Awami League election for the first time in three decades is mainly a contest between the BNP alliance and the Jamaat-e-Islami.
