Kathmandu. Safer Internet Day is being celebrated today with the slogan ‘Smart Technologies on AI-Powered Internet, Safer Alternatives’.
Safer Internet Day is celebrated worldwide annually to promote the safe and positive use of digital technologies for children and young people and to spark a national dialogue on the same.
Safer Internet Day is celebrated in more than 170 countries around the world, coordinated by INSAFE and INHOPE, in collaboration with the European Commission and national safe internet centers across Europe.
In particular, Safer Internet Day provides a platform to promote the safe and positive use of digital technologies for children and young people, and to catalyze a national dialogue on the same. Child Safe Net has been coordinating and promoting the Safer Internet Day in Nepal since 2019.
Along with the rapid progress of the information and communication technology sector, this revolution has also brought with it innumerable negative and frightening effects.
Children and young people are among those who are making the most use of digital technology. Unsafe use of digital technology makes them vulnerable to serious risks such as online sexual harassment and exploitation, cyberbullying, phishing and sextortion. Such risks can affect children’s mental and intellectual development, demoralize them and reduce their self-esteem.
Children, young people, parents, teachers, and governments need to take cybersecurity seriously and fulfill their responsibilities to make the internet a safer place.
