Kathmandu. The ‘Social Media Bill-2081’ tabled by the Oli government has been withdrawn from the National Assembly. A meeting of the National Assembly on Monday unanimously endorsed the decision to withdraw the bill.

NA chair Narayan Dahal had tabled the bill for a decision in the meeting. Earlier, Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Anil Sinha had presented a proposal on behalf of the Prime Minister seeking withdrawal of the bill.

The then KP Sharma Oli-led government had registered the bill in the National Assembly on February 10 last year. The then Communications Minister Prithvi Subba Gurung had forwarded the bill to prepare a legal basis for effective regulation and control the misuse of social media.

The bill incorporates provisions for maintaining social harmony, cultural tolerance and good governance, hate speech, defamation, trolls, fake and misleading information, fine and jail time.

This meeting also passed the Tourism Bill, 2081. The meeting also passed a condolence motion on the demise of former National Assembly member Shukra Raj Sanyok. The National Assembly will next meet on February 11.
