Kathmandu. The Supreme Court (SC) is hearing the petition filed by former minister Raj Kumar Gupta, who is currently in jail in connection with the Lichibari corruption case.
{{TAG_OPEN_p_7} Gupta has filed a petition to quash the order of the Special Court to send him to custody in a corruption case. A division bench of Justices Binod Sharma and Shanti Singh Thapa will hear the writ petition.
Gupta, the former minister, has claimed in court that the allegations against him are false and that he did not take any bribe from anyone.TAG_OPEN_p_6 However, the court ruled that he could not be presumed innocent on the basis of immediate evidence.
Gupta is accused of taking a bribe of Rs 53 lakh from a real estate businessman on the promise of stopping the transfer of the chief officer of the Kaski Land Revenue Office and making him a member of the Land Commission.TAG_OPEN_p_5 The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) had also accused Gupta and former minister Ranjita Shrestha of taking bribe of Rs 25 lakh in order to provide work facilities.
Earlier, a division bench of Justices Sapana Pradhan Malla and Nripa Dhoj Niraula had ordered to consider whether the petitions of other defendants were entertained or not.TAG_OPEN_p_4
