Kathmandu. At least 24 people have been killed in an explosion near the Quetta railway tracks in Pakistan’s southwestern Balochistan province.

More than 50 people were wounded today when a powerful explosion targeted a train carrying army personnel and their families, a senior official told AFP.

Rescue operations are underway at the site. Rescuers and locals are searching for people trapped under the rubble.

The soldiers were travelling with their families for the Eid holiday, which begins on Tuesday. A train travelling from Quetta to Peshawar was shattered and several coaches nearby were completely damaged in the blast.

Balochistan is Pakistan’s largest province by area but lagging behind in development index. Baloch separatist groups in the country accuse the central government of exploiting natural gas and mineral resources without benefiting the local population, which has long posed a security challenge.
