Kathmandu. Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping met in Beijing today.
Xi welcomed Putin with a ceremony at the Great Hall of the People. According to the BBC, Putin told Xi that relations between the two countries had reached an “unprecedented high”. Immediately after this, the two delegations also held bilateral talks.
Russian President Donald Trump’s visit to Beijing comes less than a week after US President Donald Trump’s visit to Beijing. Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in Beijing on Monday for a summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping. According to the Kremlin, Putin is expected to discuss important and sensitive issues between Russia and China during his stay in Beijing.
China’s foreign ministry said Putin’s visit was aimed at deepening bilateral relations and promoting greater stability and positive energy flow to the world. When Putin arrived in Beijing, he was greeted by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and a military contingent.
This is the 25th state visit of the Russian President to China. Officials on both sides have not yet publicly announced the main contents of the talks during the Xi-Putin meeting. But the meeting assumes significance especially in the context of the two countries’ relations, the war in Ukraine, energy supply chains and the increasingly polarised world politics.
