Kathmandu. At least 15 people have died after a military helicopter crashed during flooding in Peru. According to the BBC, the helicopter crashed when it lost radio contact while taking off in the Arequipa region, which has been hit by torrential rain and flooding.

All 11 passengers and four crew members were killed in the accident. Seven of the deceased are children. Officials said helicopters have been deployed in the area to assist in search and rescue operations as the mudslides and flooding in the river have caused extensive damage.

According to local media, an elderly woman died and a man was struck by lightning.

In the Arequipa region, local authorities have appealed to the government for help as floods have damaged houses and are uninhabitable.
