KATHMANDU — Former Prime Minister Dr Baburam Bhattarai has pledged to support the people the country deems in need in the upcoming elections. After announcing the withdrawal of his candidacy on Friday, he said that he will continue to serve the people.

“I would like to express my commitment to support the people the country wants in the coming days,” Bhattarai said, “I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to the proposers and supporters.” He said he decided to withdraw his candidacy following requests from various people and political parties. “I have been advised by people from different political parties that people like you should be a common person. The fluid situation in the country has not taken a definite shape,” Baburam said, adding, “Friends and parties have also said that you should move ahead by giving advice rather than in the election competition.” He said that it would be better if he stayed out and played the role of a guardian as per everyone’s request.

“What I have wanted all my life is the state of federal democratic republic. Challenges have been added and they have to be managed,” he said, adding, “Mainly, we have to move forward as the basis of rapid economic development and prosperity in the country.” As per the request of all, I have decided to support the parties from outside and take back the role of guardian of the country that will be needed tomorrow. The Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) had urged him to withdraw his candidacy.

The Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RSP) has fielded its general secretary Kabindra Burlakoti in the constituency. Burlakoti was defeated by NCP Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda in the previous election from the same constituency. This time, Prachanda has changed the constituency. According to sources, Prachanda has also called Baburam and asked him to withdraw his candidacy. Lekhnath Neupane is the candidate of the Communist Party of Nepal in the constituency.
