Kathmandu. FIFA president Gianni Infantino has apologised for his mistakes.
However, Infantino will remain as FIFA president after receiving the support of FIFA officials at a meeting in Morocco. President Infantino called a meeting of the management board yesterday after mounting criticism.
After the nearly four-hour meeting, FIFA said in a statement that the management board had confirmed its support for President Infantino. UEFA said last week that it had lost confidence in a plan to bring in private investment. UEFA described the proposal as “opaque” and “closed-door”. There has also been criticism from within FIFA over the issue.
FIFA Secretary General Mattias Gröfström said in an internal message to staff that the situation was “tragic and reprehensible”. But after the meeting, he also expressed his full support for Infantino along with the management board.
FIFA president Infantino and general secretary Grofstrom sent a joint letter to FIFA’s vice-president, council members and 211 member associations apologizing for their errors. Infantino has been embroiled in controversy after he proposed to bring in private investment in FIFA tournaments, including the men’s and women’s World Cups.
