Kathmandu. Religious leaders have made a joint appeal to maintain social harmony following the eruption of religious violence in the Tarai-Madhes. They issued a joint appeal after holding a meeting with Rastriya Janata Party (RSP) President Rabi Lamichhane.
The appeal has been signed by General Secretary of Vishwa Hindu Mahasangh Nepal Ram Chandra Tiwari, Chairman of Jamiat U Ulma Nepal Maulana Mohammad Khalid Siddiqui, Secretariat Member of World Hindu Federation Nepal Rajuraj Phuyal and Chairman of Al-Salam Society Maulana Nazrul Hasan Falahi.
“Nepal is a multi-religious, multi-ethnic, multi-lingual and multi-cultural country. We are clear that religious tolerance, social harmony, mutual respect, national unity and identity being the basis of national unity and identity will not be undermined due to any incident or dispute. ’
They have demanded a thorough investigation into the incidents that took place in Sunsari, Siraha and other districts of Madhes province and take action against anyone involved in illegal activities, provide necessary relief to the victims’ families, provide proper compensation and provide free and effective treatment to the injured.
“At a time when various interest groups are trying to spread violent incidents in the name of religion, we appeal to all citizens to exercise restraint and not to indulge in provocative, hateful or disturbing social harmony,” the statement reads. ’
He has appealed to all to be aware of various activities being carried out to disturb the centuries-old tolerance and social harmony. “I appeal to all Nepalis to stand firmly in favour of peace, harmony, religious tolerance, rule of law and national unity and reject any form of violence, hatred and divisive activities,” the statement reads.
