Kathmandu. Nepal Telecommunication Authority (NTA) has shut down more than two lakh websites and apps that are involved in online betting and illegal financial transactions.

Prevention of online betting and scamming was included in the 100 agenda related to governance reforms released by the government on March 26. The 42nd point of the agenda states that the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology will shut down betting apps and their websites within 24 hours. ’

According to this decision, all betting websites operating in the country were closed at that time. Even after the closure of these websites, the process of opening under a new name continues. According to the authority, 223,568 such apps and websites have been closed since the organization of this year’s FIFA World Cup.

The authority has taken immediate action after the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers also showed special concern over the increase in the use of such betting apps during the World Cup. The NRA has also formed a separate task force for the same.

According to Om Prakash Mahato, assistant director and engineer of the authority, who is a member of the task force, such websites were shut down by keeping the representatives of Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in the Authority after the start of the World Cup.

Assistant Director Mahato said that the URL of such websites will be blocked in collaboration with ISP. According to him, it is difficult to find so many websites one by one, so such betting ‘sites’ and websites with illegal financial transactions identified by various authorized organizations and agencies are closed in collaboration with ISPs.

According to him, closing one website can be a challenge for the opening of a new website. In such a situation, the more new ones open, the more they should be closed. For this, ‘hunting’ is done using the ‘Thread Intelligence Tool’. A separate manpower has been arranged for this.

The authority has said that it can update the link https://github.com/NTA-OPM if it comes to know about the illegal website.
