Kathmandu. Nepal has been allowed to carry Indian banknotes of Rs 200 and Rs 500 denominations. Earlier, the government was allowed to carry notes of Rs 100 denominations but now Rs 200 and Rs 500 denominations can be carried as well.
Issuing a notice on Friday, Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) has made it mandatory to carry the denomination note of Rs 25,000. Earlier, the circular issued in August last year had a provision that one can carry up to Rs 25,000 in Indian currency but only Rs 100 or less denomination.
As a result, tourists coming to Nepal from India or those returning from India after working in India have been facing problems. This problem will be removed after the purchase of 500 denomination notes. However, the ban on Rs 2,000 notes is still in force.
However, such notes should be issued by the Government of India on or after November 2016. The smuggling of Indian currency notes was banned in Nepal after the Indian currency was banned.
