Kathmandu. The government is preparing to operate a land bank for the use of barren land. The Ministry of Land Management, Cooperatives, Federal Affairs and General Administration has forwarded the process to operate land bank in the local level.
The Ministry has started the necessary preparations with the objective of utilizing private land that has been lying unused and barren for a long time to use it in productive sector.
According to the notice made public by the Ministry, the local governments can identify unused private land and use it through the land bank as per the legal provisions as per the Land Use Act-2076 BS and Land Use Rules-2079 (third amendment, 2082).
According to this provision, the landowner can voluntarily list his land in the land bank if he is unable to cultivate it himself or if he has not used it for a long time.
According to the ministry, this process is expected to increase the utilization of barren land, increase agricultural production, attract youths to agriculture sector, protect fertile land and reduce dependence on imported agricultural products.
Thousands of hectares of arable land remain barren in different parts of the country due to migration, foreign employment and lack of labour. The government believes that after the operation of the land bank, such land will be regenerated and local economic activities will be expanded.
