Kathmandu. World football’s governing body, FIFA, has launched an investigation into Argentina’s post-World Cup final.
FIFA’s disciplinary committee has appointed a prosecutor to investigate what happened after the final at MetLife Stadium in the United States.
Any player or coach involved in the brawl could be suspended, as could the Argentine Football Association (AFA) fined.
After the 1-0 defeat on Sunday morning, members of the Argentina team and support staff and the Spanish players got into an altercation. At that time, Spain’s players were celebrating their World Cup success.
According to FIFA, referee Slavak Vincich sent Argentina’s Leandro Paredes off the field after initially grabbing Spain’s Eric Garcia by the neck. Paredes was stripped of his “red card” shortly afterwards and no disciplinary action was taken at the time, FIFA said. During the final, Argentina’s Enzo Fernandez was sent off after receiving a red card.
FIFA has also opened disciplinary proceedings against Argentine players who displayed banners in support of their country’s claim in the Falkland Islands after their 2-1 semi-final win over England.
