Kathmandu. Lalitpur Metropolitan City (LMC) has launched a smart safety barredo in Jawalakhel to enhance pedestrian safety. According to KMC, the system, installed for the first time in Nepal, will help reduce road accidents by effectively enforcing the traffic rules.
According to Sitaram Hachhethu chief of Lalitpur Metropolitan City Police Force, the smart safety fence will encourage pedestrians to use zebra crossing only during the designated time. The barricade opens automatically when the green light is lit and the barricade closes automatically when the red light is on, which is believed to help in controlling the tendency of crossing the road with red light.
Due to the sensor system installed in the barracks, the barricade does not close when the pedestrians are in the middle. This will help people cross the road to move safely and reduce the risk of potential accidents, the metropolis said.
The metropolis has also made preparations to place pots on the right and left sides of the road to stop people crossing the road from places other than zebra crossing.
Mayor of Lalitpur Metropolitan City, Chiribabu Maharjan, said that the incidents of pedestrian accidents have increased in the past due to ignorance of traffic rules and proper use of zebra crossings.
He said that if the test is successful, there is a plan to gradually expand the traffic lights in all the crossroads of Lalitpur Metropolitan City.
