Two arrested with gold and silver ornaments being smuggled to US

Kathmandu. KATHMANDU: The Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) security office has arrested two persons after seizing gold and silver ornaments being sent to the United States of America.

According to the security office, a cargo box of shoes, pants, sarees and other clothes mentioned under manifest number AMS AP 321 was opened at around 5:30 pm on June 30 at the cargo complex building of Tribhuvan International Airport after a suspicious X-ray test was detected.

During the investigation, a large quantity of gold and silver ornaments not mentioned in the manifest were found.

Confiscated include 22 big and 44 small Naugedi, 14 units of 21 Gedi Naugedi, 16 Moon, 20 amulets, 18 single and double brooches, 5 big and two small heads, 16 brooches with the Nepali flag, 23 khukuri shaped brooches, 18 mangalsutra, 39 pearls, one ranihar and one trident.

According to the police, the equipment was being sent to the USA from Kathmandu via Apex Logistics Pvt Ltd through Bouddha-based Unique Cargo, Jhapa.

Those arrested have been identified as Yagya Raj Subedi, 46, proprietor of Apex Logistics Pvt Ltd and Ram Prasad Dahal, 34, proprietor of Unique Cargo Pvt Ltd.

According to the Tribhuvan International Airport Security Office, the arrested have been handed over to the Tribhuvan Airport Customs Office, Gauchar, for necessary legal action.
