Complaint filed with Press Council over 176 news items

Kathmandu. Complaints have been lodged at the Press Council Nepal for publishing 176 news items that were not true till May 19 of the current fiscal year.

Addressing an interaction programme ‘Citizen’s Expectation: Responsible Journalism’ organized by Editors Society Nepal here today, the Editors Society said that the Editors’ Society Nepal shared this information in the capital city. The second highest number of complaints registered with the council are related to defamation.

Presenting a working paper at the program, journalist Toya Gautam said that although more than eight thousand newspapers are permanently registered with the Department of Information, only five thousand have been published and the Press Council has reached Nepal for classification. According to him, journalists can do quality journalism by using the changing technology as per the time.

On the occasion, former executive member of Nepal Engineering Association, Engineer Umesh Gupta, said that journalists should make the issue of social examination to find out whether the engineering structure is useful or not. According to him, investigative journalism should be carried out on this subject as well-known consultant companies have also been copy-pasting the environmental impact assessment report.

Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) spokesperson and Chief of Information Communication Department, Nabin Manandhar said that journalism should be based on truth and facts. He also stressed that the media should properly collect news about the activities carried out by the local levels.

Gorkhapatra daily’s Editor-in-Chief Junar Babu Basnet said that journalism has a great significance as right information is needed to take right decision in a democratic system. He was of the view that mass media should work in a way to ease the daily life of the citizens.

Federation of Nepali Journalists Kathmandu Chapter chair Shova Aryal commented that the perception towards journalism was different as the information disseminated in social media was not being edited. Pointing out the need of providing media literacy in the society for this, he said that the media should inform about the rights of the citizens.
