Govt should form powerful commission under leadership of former Chief Justice for constitution amendment: NC

Kathmandu. KATHMANDU: The main opposition Nepali Congress (NC) has urged the government to form a powerful all-party commission under the leadership of former Chief Justice for constitution amendment.

Speaking at the meeting of the House of Representatives on Tuesday, Nepali Congress leader Arjun Narsingh KC demanded this.

Stating that the issue of constitution amendment would not be acceptable only through debates around the government, he argued that it was imperative to hold a round table conference for national dialogue by forming a powerful commission led by former Chief Justice comprising experts.

Leader KC also said that the debate on constitution amendment should not be limited to the government task force.

“The debate on constitution amendment should not be limited to the government task force.

For this, it is necessary to form a powerful all-party commission in coordination with the former Chief Justice comprising constitutional experts, political parties, administrative experts, and civil society representatives.

It has become imperative to hold a round table conference for national dialogue through the commission. The debate around the state of national complexity, conflict and social polarization alone will not make the constitution amendment successful.

It can build legitimacy, public trust and common national consensus only through a broader national dialogue. ’
