Kathmandu. President Ram Chandra Poudel has said the role of the local government has become more important and responsible with the establishment of federal democratic republic.
Inaugurating the newly-constructed Laukahi City Hall at Koshi rural municipality in Sunsari today, the former Prime Minister stressed the need of expediting development activities as per people’s basic needs and expectation.
President Poudel said that the local level should be active in effective service delivery, good governance and development as the government is closest to the people. He was of the view that the local levels should be dedicated to maintain the people’s trust by working in accordance with the norms and values of the federal democratic republic.
Stating that the construction of modern and multi-purpose city hall in rural areas was a positive achievement, he said it presented an example of cooperation among the federal, state and local levels. Highlighting the historical, religious and tourism potentials of the area along the Saptakoshi River, he urged religious sites like Barahachhetra, Ramdhuni, Pindeshwar, Dantkali and Budhasubba to be linked with tourism.
Expressing happiness over the re-establishment of the settlement displaced by the Koshi Dam burst in 2065 BS, he urged all three tiers of governments to pay special attention to preparedness to mitigate the risk of flood and disaster.
On the occasion, Chief Minister of Koshi Province Hikmat Kumar Karki demanded the federal government to hand over the responsibility of management and operation of Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve to the province government.
Chief Minister Karki complained that the expected development and promotion of Koshi Tappu could not take place under the federal government despite having abundant tourism potential. He pledged to develop the reserve as a model tourism destination of the country along with the conservation of biodiversity by constructing the necessary physical infrastructures if the responsibility of the reserve was given to the state government.
