Kathmandu. CPN-UML lawmaker Guru Prasad Baral accused the government of treating the landless squatters inhumanely.
Speaking in the meeting of the House of Representatives on Wednesday, Baral expressed his concern that the government has evicted the landless squatters from the place where they have been living without adequate preparation and reliable settlement.
He said that the government’s decision to provide Rs 15,000 each to each family for three months (May, June and July) was not practical. “A family of five costs around Rs 100 per day. How is it possible to live around Kathmandu with such money?” he asked.
Baral termed the government’s move as a “big, inhuman attack” on landless squatters. Stating that the Rs 25,000 that the government has promised for temporary accommodation will not solve the problem, he said, “The place where they were living was their temporary residence.
Now the government has forcibly removed it when it is time to make permanent arrangements,” he said.
He also demanded that the government should bring a concrete plan for the long-term management of landless squatters.
