Kathmandu. From now on, the responsibility of directly monitoring and regulating the quality and hygiene of food items has been given to the provinces and local levels.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development is planning to make the province and local levels active in market monitoring as per the Food Hygiene and Quality Act, 2081 BS.

Now, the provinces will check and regulate the quality of food products sold and distributed within the province and the local levels within their municipalities.

This decision of the Ministry to make the provision of the Act effective is aimed at ensuring the health rights of consumers at the local level.

In order to implement this right, the local levels can now appoint food inspectors according to their own laws.

The ministry has also directed the government to appoint qualified people to the post of Food Inspector.
