Kathmandu. Vice-president of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) DP Aryal has been elected the Speaker of the House of Representatives unopposed.

Aryal was the only candidate for the post of speaker by 2 pm.

The Parliament Secretariat had fixed 11:00 am to 2:00 pm as the time for filing candidacy. Aryal was proposed by Rastriya Samajwadi Party President Rabi Lamichhane while Finance Minister Swarnim Wagle, Minister for Law Sobita Gautam and Minister for Physical Infrastructure Sunil Lamsal seconded it.

The opposition parties did not file their candidacies as the RSP alone had a two-thirds majority. A meeting of the House of Representatives scheduled for Sunday will formally announce Aryal as the Speaker.

After filing his candidacy, Aryal has pledged to work in line with the constitution, laws and welfare of the Nepali people.

“My commitment would be to play the role of the legislature in a just manner in maintaining the balance among the executive, judiciary and legislature keeping the interest of nation and nationality at the centre,” he said. ’
