Kathmandu. The 69th National Cooperatives Day is being observed across the country today. As per the tradition, this year’s Cooperatives Day is being celebrated on April 20 with the slogan ‘Entrepreneurship and Transparency: Inevitability of Cooperatives’.

The cooperative sector currently plays an important role in the economic activities of the country. There are about 30,000 cooperatives registered across the country and more than 6 million members are associated with this sector. The cooperative sector is said to provide employment to about 50,000 people directly and indirectly to 500,000 people. The contribution of 3 percent to the GDP and 15 percent to the financial access is seen in the cooperative sector.

Despite the quantitative development of cooperatives, there is a challenge to improve the quality. The popularity of cooperatives has been decreasing in recent times due to various distortions and anomalies. For this reason, today is taken as an opportunity to draw attention to the importance of cooperatives, transparency and business improvement.
