19,000 chickens culled in Sunsari due to bird flu outbreak

Kathmandu. Bird flu is spreading in poultry farms at different local levels of the district. Chief of the Veterinary Hospital and Livestock Service Expert Centre, Inaruwa, Dr Manoj Kumar Mahato, said that the bird flu epidemic is spreading in poultry farms in different parts of the district including the district headquarters.

According to him, the infection was found in broiler chickens reared by Suman Kumar Rai of Kusumgachhi in Inaruwa municipality-2. According to Dr Mahato, bird flu infection has been confirmed in chickens and ducks of local breeds reared by Suman Govinda Shrestha of Itahari-16. He said the measures to control the disease were intensified after the Central Livestock Disease Investigation Laboratory tested chicken farms in different parts of the district.

High alertness has been maintained in the area around the farm to prevent the spread of the infection while surveillance has been tightened in other poultry farms as well, said Dr Mahato. He said that farmers have been urged to immediately inform the concerned bodies if any unusual symptoms are found in the chickens and to protect the chickens from external contact. According to him, 19,365 chickens have been destroyed from 14 poultry farms in the district so far.
