Colombia military plane crashes, 66 dead

Kathmandu. A military plane has crashed in Colombia. At least 66 people were killed when an Air Force plane crashed shortly after take-off in the south. Many have been injured.

Air Force Commander Carlos Fernando Silva Rueda said the plane was carrying 114 military personnel and 11 crew members. The plane was an American-made C-130 Hercules, which was used to transport troops.

According to BBC Hindi, the plane crashed near the city of Puerto Leguizamo in Putumayo province. Emergency rescuers are searching for survivors in the rubble.

Defense Minister Pedro Sanchez said the Lockheed Martin Hercules C-130 transport plane carrying security forces crashed in Puerto Leguizamo while taking off. He described the incident near the Peruvian border as “a very sad day for the country”. The plane also exploded as the ammunition stored inside the plane caught fire.

Local media also showed the wounded soldiers being taken from the crash site to the hospital on small motorbikes.

“This should not have been a terrible accident,” President Gustavo Puerto said on X. ’

In his lengthy post, he also blamed “bureaucratic problems” for the delay in his plan to modernise the equipment and aircraft of the armed forces.
